Family walks in the Main Square People dance in the streets at night in Merida and spend their days in the parks and plazas of this colonial city with its many monuments, museums, old churches and municipal buildings. The Zocalo is the site for the daily raising and lowering of the flag. It is where Comandante Marcos - the champion of the people of the state of Chiapas - spoke when he came to town. And its stage is used regularly by musicians, street clowns, entertainers and dancing groups. Archaeological Museum

Canton Palace, which houses the archaeology museum, is located on the main avenue of Merida, the Paseo de Montejo. It was designed by the Italian architect Enrico Deserti, and built in the first decade of the 20th century to be the residence of the ex-governor of Yucatan, General Francisco Canton. The Canton Palace unites its attractive architecture with an extraordinary number of archaeological treasures, one of the most important collections on the development of Pre-Colombian Mayan culture in the Yucatan Peninsula.
